UN Security Council will discuss Houthi Red Sea shipping threats

The UN Security Council will discuss the Houthi threats from Yemen against shipping traffic in the Red Sea on Monday, following a request from the United Kingdom, France, Albania, Malta, Japan and the United States.

The U.S. is reportedly weighing options for targeted strikes against the Houthi rebels in Yemen following an incident on Saturday in which American and British warships shot down a total of 15 drones launched by the rebels against ships in the Red Sea.

On Saturday, Danish shipping firm Maersk announced it would suspend all Red Sea traffic for its vessels after a container ship owned by the company was struck by a missile a day prior.

Houthi rebels have announced they will attack any vessels heading to or from Israeli ports that pass through the Red Sea.

German news site Bild announced on Saturday that the German navy, Deutsche Marine, is reportedly sending the “Hessen” warship to the area to protect German shipping vessels.
