The American technology company NVIDIA announced on Monday that it plans to invest millions of dollars in building an artificial intelligence supercomputer in Israel.

The “Israel-1” supercomputer, is slated to be operational in 2024 and expected to become one of the fastest and most powerful high-level performance AI computers in the world.

The new project, complex and vast in scope, will require cooperation from Israeli tech professionals.

Gilad Shainer, senior vice president of marketing at NVIDIA, revealed that the company is currently collaborating with some 800 Israeli startups involving tens of thousands of software engineers.

Shainer described artificial intelligence as the “most important technology of our lifetime.”

"Generative AI is going everywhere nowadays. You need to be able to run training on large datasets," he told Reuters.

The marketing VP stressed that the supercomputer’s capabilities would become available to local Israeli companies.

“This is a large scale system that actually will enable them to do training much quicker, to build frameworks, and build solutions that can tackle more complex problems."

Last week, Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the International University of Rabat to build an AI and aeronautics innovation center in Morocco.

Artificial intelligence can also be used to uncover the past. Israeli researchers recently presented a unique AI model that automatically translates ancient Akkadian texts written in cuneiform into English.

Despite its tiny size, the Jewish state has become an important global player in the development of cutting-edge technologies such as cyber tech and AI.
