Sheba Medical Center in central Israel was recently ranked among the world’s 20 leading “smart hospitals” for 2024, according to U.S. magazine, Newsweek.

Sheba emerged as one of only five non-American hospitals on the top 20 list.

The hospitals that took the top 20 spots were ranked according to their ability to optimize healthcare through the use of technological innovation.

Prof. Yitshak Kreiss, director-general of Sheba Medical Center, outlined the hospital’s commitment to medical innovation in 2022.

“We are committed to continuing to lead in the development and implementation of medical innovation, in clinical research and in treatment to meet the medical challenges of the coming decade,” Kreiss said.

“This is how we can provide each and every patient with the most advanced, personal and best treatment,” he concluded.

Sheba was established in 1948 and initially served as a military hospital during Israel's War of Independence.

From its humble beginning, Sheba eventually emerged as the largest hospital in the Jewish state and has since become a prominent player in global medical care.

The hospital’s 1,250 doctors, 2,300 nurses and 15,000 healthcare workers handle over one million patients each year, including some 200,000 emergency visits.

In May, Sheba became part of the Mayo Clinic’s Global Alliance, which focuses on international data-sharing and the growing use of artificial intelligence in healthcare around the world.

Sheba's Director of Transformation and Innovation Prof. Eyal Zimlichman welcomed Sheba’s inclusion in the American-led global medical alliance.

“We are thrilled to be part of this historic alliance to transform the future of healthcare,” Zimlichman said at the time.
