Czech president seeks to move embassy to Jerusalem

Czech President Miloš Zeman announced his recommendation to move his country's embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem before he leaves his current post in March 2023.

Zeman, who is pro-Israel, requested the approval for the move from Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala.

Opposition is expected from both the E.U. and the Czech coalition, as is condemnation from the U.N. General Assembly.

Zeman stated that Fiala is also in favor of the embassy move, and suggested that he and Fiala would visit Israel for the grand opening.

Some believe Zeman is deliberately putting pressure on the Czech government to approve the measure because hopes to leave behind a  legacy of the embassy move.

If Zeman succeeds, it may serve as a precedent for other E.U. countries, such as Italy, who have sought closer ties with Israel.
