Blinken meets PA President Abbas in Ramallah amid street protests
U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken continued his visit to the region by meeting the President of the Palestinian Authority, Mahmoud Abbas, in Ramallah on Wednesday.
Blinken was welcomed by raucous demonstrations against his presence in the PA’s capital, with chants of “Blinken out” and signs protesting against the pro-Israel stance of the Biden administration.
The PA security forces dispersed the protesters and arrested several of them.
On Tuesday, Blinken said that the PA “has a responsibility to reform itself, to improve its governance,” adding that he would raise the issue with President Abbas.
U.S. officials have said that they want to see a reformed PA take over governance of the Gaza Strip at the end of the ongoing war between Israel and the Hamas terrorist organization.
